En 1941, l'ancien boxeur Robert Prewitt est affecté à une caserne basée à Honolulu où il est sollicité par le capitaine Holmes pour remonter sur le ring afin de défendre l'honneur de la garnison. Mais Prewitt refuse, hanté d'avoir rendu aveugle un homme lors de son ultime combat. Il subit alors d'incessantes humiliations destinées à le forcer à accepter le défi. Dans le même temps, le sergent Warden s'éprend de Karen Holmes, la fille de son supérieur.
